SCHOOL DAY
Arts Education
New Traditions is a creative arts elementary school with a long and proud history of promoting the arts within our curriculum. We believe that all children can learn and be successful through arts-related programs that work hand in hand with our academics. Our commitment to maintaining robust visual art, music and other creative opportunities at New Traditions - for all of our students - makes our school unique. New Traditions has an auditorium stage where music and other performances are held, a dedicated art room with ample space for projects in a variety of media, and a kiln for firing ceramics.
Our Arts program helps our students excel academically, socially, and emotionally. In addition to Specialty Classes (listed below), our teachers plan lessons to integrate the arts into classroom teaching. Thanks to our generous support from the PTA, our K-5 Students have the opportunity to engage in the following specialty classes led by skilled artists:
Visual Arts
AIMS (Adventures in Music)
Music and Movement
DISC (Dance in Schools and Communities - 2nd/3rd Grades)
Ceramics
Outdoor Education
New Traditions has an outdoor "classroom" that teachers use to educate their students on a full range of lessons. The goal is to connect the children to the natural world through hands-on learning in our school gardens and spark their interest in science.
School Library
Students have 2 full days of library enrichment: Thursday and Friday. Students in the lower grades visit the library every week for 30 minutes, while upper grades visit every week for 45 minutes. Judy L. Viertel is the Teacher-Librarian at New Traditions.
MORNING CIRCLE
Teachers, students & parents gather at the start of each school day as a way to build community. During this time, parents mingle and learn about upcoming events, staff recognize achievements (aka Dragon Scales), and students move their body through guided "Morning Movement".
